Why Don't They Work? // Getting to Know ASX.

     You found some cool videos and it wouldn't work? And you want to know why. In this help blog, this will explain why.

     Probably, this is because you might be using a type file called 'asx'. An 'asx' is short for ASF Streaming Redirector File, which is a Windows Media container file. It is an XML redirector file for ASF and are metafiles (i.e., providing information about ASF media files, including descriptions of multimedia content. When a brower links to an ASX file, the ASX file in turn links to an ASF file on a server.

     Some people have problems opening video files and end up saying 'Can't Find the Server'. Usually the ASF file no longer exists.

+     The Requirements

     Please make sure that you have a Windows Media Player PowerToy on your MSN Space. You also need MS Notepad and a file hoster. Read more for more ideas.

+     Making a Media Playlist

     Go to Start and find the application 'Notepad' in Accessories.

     Copy and Paste the following code to your notepad.

<title>PLAYLIST NAME</title>
<entry>
<title>SONG TITLE</title>
<author>ARTIST NAME</author>
<Ref href="URL NAME"/>
</entry>

     Replace 'PLAYLIST NAME' with the name of the Music List. For an example 'My Playlist' or 'John's Music'. Replace ''NAME OF SONG'' and ''ARTIST NAME'' with what they say like 'The Black Eyed Peas, etc.' Now replace ''URL NAME'' with the URL of the song. You can host your music on many file hosting services and get its URL//Address.

     To add more songs to your Media Playlist, copy the code from <entry> to </entry> and make modifications in the URL and the titles of the song.

      Once you're done. Save the file (on the notepad) anything like ''MyList'.wmv'', ''MyList.mp3'' or whatever type of file you would put in the playlist and choose all the files as the type of file. If it's a wmv, make it as a wmv. If it's an MP3, change it to an MP3. You must view these two screenshots by clicking here and here for full understanding.

     All you need to do is to get a FileHoster. Commonly, I use FileLodge. After uploading your new media playlist,  there will be a provided URL address. Paste the address into your Media Player Powertoy URL. To let people skip songs, I would recommend you to choose 'Full' Mode. Save it and you've done it after some time.

     If you want to add a video you made yourself edited by a tool like 'Windows Movie Maker', you can upload it from your file hoster, upload it and use the same method if you want to put it on your Media Playlist.

Once you have finished getting your Media Player, all you have to find is an accepted code. Remember that only WMA, WMV, WAV, AVI, MPG, MPEG and MP3s are accepted. Other codes wouldn't work.

Choose one of the codes on our Music Video Code blog and you're done. If you want your Media Player to automatically start, make sure you select 'Auto Start'.
